Cayman Islands diving

The Cayman Islands is made up of three islands located in the Caribbean Sea, south of Florida. The main and biggest island is Grand Cayman, the other two are Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Cayman has world class diving and has something for everyone. There are wall dives, reef dives, wrecks, shallow and deep dives and liveaboard diving. You will find many dive operations on the islands to cater for your every diving need.

Always dive according to your level of training. Never enter the water without checking with the local dive center for safety, additional information, level required for each dive site and without being accompanied by a professional.

Climate:

The Cayman Islands are blessed with great weather and underwater visibility. That’s the reason it is possible to explore the underwater world all year round.

Visibility often averaging 150 feet (46 metres) - 200 feet (61 metres) Coldest time: January and February Warmest time: July and August Possible to dive: All year round Best time to dive: January to March are probably the best time to visit as the weather is mildest, but diving is on all year. March to April are the driest yet cooler months. Although many people in the Caymans opt to dive without a wet suit you may want at this particular time to dive with one. The water temperatures will be in the neighbourhood of 78°F (25.67°C) - 82°F (27.8°C). The Cayman Islands are blessed with great weather and underwater visibility. That’s the reason it is possible to explore the underwater world all year round. Furthermore the dive sites are close so even the distant ones are easily reached by boat in about 20 minutes.

There are both shallow and deep dives making it possible for divers of all levels of expertise to enjoy their diving holidays to the full. One particular place that is a must when visiting the Caymans is Stingray City. This is a shallow dive of not more than 15 feet (5 metres) where you can interact freely with lots of southern atlantic stingrays.

Grand Cayman's walls are spectacular and the marine life vibrant. You will encounter a lot of stingrays in Grand Cayman. There are some really popular sites in the Grand Cayman like the Groupers Grotto, whose name suggests that there are lots of groupers on this site. There’s also the Maze with lots of swim throughs and caves and the North Wall that is a spectacular wall dive.

Cayman Brac has interesting wall dives and shore diving as well. While in the Cayman Brac you can explore the MV Capt, Keith Tibbets wreck, a Russian warship.

Little Cayman has superb wall dives. Bloody Bay Marine Park includes Jackson’s Bay and Bloody Bay that have lot of dive sites to offer. Liveaboard diving is a great way to explore the Caymans. On liveaboard you will visit the same sites done by dive operators based on shore. However on a liveaboard all three islands can be included in the itinerary and therefore you get the most out of your diving vacation.

There are very many diving centers in the Cayman Islands. They offer courses from beginner to advanced levels. You can get certified through different certification agencies, the major ones are represented here. The dive operators offer shore and boat outings. Most boat outings are two tank dives. If you do not have your own equipment it’s possible to rent it from the centers.
