Smile How To Prepare A New Mask

I've just invested in a Cressi Matrix, and obviously want to avoid fogging problems during dives. I've heard so many old-wives-tales about precautions, and I've followed some of them, but still I ended up with occasional fogging, for no apparent reason.

Can I have some help please? What works for you?

Don't bother with that stuff they sell as a pre-treatment, stick to toothpaste
Don't use gel toothpaste

That artificial spit works well as long as you're not left for ages before

Don't listen to tripe about "the greener the better" That's not only disgusting, it's bollox
IMVHO rinse first, minimum spit really rubbed in with remaining wetness, then very light rinsing again.

Yep ... put toothpaste on the glass - as Zeus said, not the gel but the proper white stuff with the odd stripe or too. The reason for this is because the toothpaste contains itsy bitsy granules and as the mask comes covered in a fine layer of erm... something, the teeny weeny granules rub this off. Be gentle rubbing it off . Obviously rinse it after you’ve rubbed the toothpaste all over the glass (i say glass, but you know what i mean).

Any dives you do from now, I would repeat what Zeus said ... spit (in a ladylike way of course) into the mask and rinse with the water and hopefully you should be fog free!

Lightbulb Re: How To Prepare A New Mask

Yup Toothpaste... and do it a few times..

Not sure if it helps but on occasions i still get a tiny bit of fogging u/w and if that happens i usually let in a small amount of water into the mask and just roll it about inside to wet the fogged areas... then purge it. (Mind you I’m assuming its a single lens mask)

Not sure if that's standard but it has worked for me as i find even the slightest fogging irritating..

Exclamation Re: How To Prepare A New Mask

What’s going on here? I've not bought a new mask since Roger managed to lose my then-wonderful Mares one in the (piddling amount of) surf carrying it to the boat which I'd backed up to the shore.

I did the usual toothbrush thing to my new (Scubapro) mask (that same Roger's suggestion, I was ever the one for nonsensical punishment and - no - he didn't pay for it) and I've used it for at least ten years since

As someone who has prescription lenses (both eyewear & mask) I can assure you that I wouldn't dream of using something that would lessen the life of said lenses; they're too bloody expensive

I think the key is to ensure you are using the right type of toothpaste. Reading the label should suffice.
