Re: How much should I be prepared to start SCUBA diving? The first question you need to ask yourself is where yo want to learn to dive. Is it with your local dive store, or on holidays. Either way it will be easy learning to dive. It might be quicker when you are on holidays, as you will have every day and all day available learning to dive. Local dive stores usually offer various schedules convenient for the customers, as they mostly work, and complete parts of the training in evening sessions or over the weekend.
If you are learning locally, you will need to find out what dive stores are nearby, and hat training associations they offer. I personally teach PADI, as it is the widest recognized training association, but then I am working in holiday resorts.
the cost of the courses vary, depending where you are, what association you choose, and much more. Most resort operations will include the required diving equipment in the course price, which means you don't have to purchase diving equipment at the beginning when you are learning. However I would strongly suggest that you will purchase your basic equipment such as mask, fins and snorkel from the word go. If you are learning to dive with your local dive store, then I suggest you are visit them in the store, and discuss the various options of training and equipment needed. You will find that it is very easy to learning to dive, and all your questions will be answered competently by a professionally run dive store.
As I don't know where you are based in the world, I don't really want to start mentioning prices for courses and equipment as this generally varies a bit.
I hope the above is helpful and I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
Have fun and always safe diving. Happy New Year to you and yours!!
