Question Shark Shield

What I'm asking is does the Shark Shield actually prevent shark attacks? The Australian manufacturer claims that the device will "deter" sharks, whatever that means, but they also have this disclaimer: "However, it must be remembered that all sharks are dangerous and unpredictable creatures, and therefore a 100% guarantee cannot be given. It is impossible to guarantee that all sharks will be deterred under all circumstances."

So anybody have an answer??

Cheers..

Talking Re: Shark Shield

These shark shields, as you call them are working very well and are used in certain places more than in others, thus making water sports activities safer etc. However it is a tool produced by humans to prevent sharks getting too close to swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts, which are enjoying the beach and shore lines. This is the next step from the huge protective nets which have been used in the past, or better which are still used in many parts of the world. Fortunately these nets are pretty good protection for the humans but are lethal obstructions for many marine animals and mammals. Lots of creatures die in these nets because they are getting trapped and cannot get out of it.

Coming back to the shark shields. They work very well and the track record some of the manufacturers present are close to 100%. With creatures such as sharks etc, one can never be 100% sure that it works. It is the same when using mosquito spray in the tropics. It hepls and prevents that mosquitos bite, but sometimes you still end up with a couple of bites.
The best way to prevent any such dangerous encounters is to use common sense, when choosing a dive site/destination. Get information from local dive operations, and only use these operations to dive at these places. But it is fact that shark attacks on humans are very, very rare, and on divers even less than that.

Have fun when you dive with sharks and enjoy the privilege of seeing these fantastic creatures when you have the opportunity to do so. I am diving since over 15 years and had the opportunity to have many encounters with lots of sharks, even with those which apparently are very dangerous. I never had any problems and still have all my body parts at the correct places ;-)

Enjoy and always safe diving

Default Re: Shark Shield

Hi Asem.
I've also heard that the 'Sharkshield' device is effective. The only issue is the cost of the device AND it's yet another piece of gear! Like Divedevil1966 I love diving with sharks and have been fascinated with these magnificent creatures most of my life. You might find this product (mine I admit) interesting. It's based on the fact tha scientists and shark experts agree that sharks seem to be very aware of a diver's eyes, simply being seen before contact is made may cause a shark to abort an attack. I would appreciate feedback from any forum member. Avoid shark attacks.
