There is a VERY effective way to prevent ear barotrauma. Equalize your ears very often and stop descending if it hurts, or if you can not equalize. It is as simple as that.
Any problems with your ears, then go and see an ENT before you start diving.

To relieve ear pain or discomfort, first attempt to open the eustachian tube and relieve the pressure. When flying, do not sleep during the descent. Frequently open the eustachian tube by these measures. If self-care attempts are unsuccessful at relieving discomfort within a few hours, or if barotrauma is severe, medical intervention may be necessary.
