Re: Diving in Egypt?? Hi all,
in August 2010 I booked a liveaboard off Hurghada to the Northern wrecks plus one week stay in a resort, date: end of January 2011. Due to the current political situation at the end of the liveaboard we got the advice to cancel the second week but me and a friend decided to stay. I just got back few days ago. It was an eerie calm in the hotel and the diving centre with only a few guests, but everything went normal and the Egyptian staff was very friendly and concerned about us. We could easily leave the resort but we were asked to follow the curfew. Also outside the hotel we didn't experience any disruptions. The army is still present in front of some administration buildings and banks, streets are quiet, the banks and shops are open, internet and telephone is stable and there is no shortage of food, in contrast to some recent media reports.
Due to the departure of nearly all tourists the atmosphere is depressed, a lot of hotels and diving centres were forced to close. Let's all hope, that the tourism will soon increase again, cause Egypt needs it to ensure jobs and income of thousands of people... and besides... the Red Sea is still one of the most excellent places for diving!
