Of course, if you are already heading there then don't miss the fun, you can do some wreck diving as you have several wreck dive sites located in Plymouth:
1- HMS Scylla
The HMS Scylla is a Leander class frigate that served in the Royal Navy between 1970 and 2003. It was then purchased by the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, stripped, de-greased and primarily sunk to be used for marine biology research.
She lays in 24 meters of water but the bridge can be accessed at around 13 meters and the deck at around 16 meters so it makes a great dive for both the novice diver and the more experienced diver alike.
2- James Egan Layne
The James Egan Layne is an old American Liberty ship which was torpedoed by a German U boat in 1945.
This 130 meter vessel is one of the most dived wrecks in the UK due to it’s relatively shallow depth and is only 20 minutes out from Looe or 30 minutes from Plymouth.
When sunk it was broken into two halves, the main section is the bow half which lays upright on a sandy bed in 24 meters. You can reach the deck at around 11 meters.
The ‘Egan Layne’ has been well dived over the years and some major features like the bridge have broken away due to the weather and sea conditions but it still makes a fantastic dive due to the amount of fish life. You will find many wrasse, Pollock, cod, lobsters etc.
3- The Elk
The Elk is an old fishing trawler which sunk in 1940 after hitting a mine. It lays in around 30 meters of water and is quite broken up. You will find some damage on the port side of this wreck which makes a perfect place for penetration. Once inside, if you fin up to the bow you will find a large conger eel tucked away. Other fish life includes dead mans fingers, cod and pollack.
This is a relatively small wreck and you can get around it in around 30 minutes but if you wanted to extend your dive you can line off the wreck and find a nearby reef where you will find some pouting and gorgonia amongst the fish life.
