Twenty new species of sharks and rays have been discovered in Indonesia in a five-year survey of catches at local fish markets, according to Australian researchers.
The survey by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, or CSIRO, represents the first in-depth look at Indonesia's sharks and rays since Dutch scientist Pieter Bleeker described more than 1,100 fish species from 1842- 60.
"Indonesia has the most diverse shark and ray fauna and the largest shark and ray fishery in the world, with reported landings of more than 100,000 tons a year," said William White, a co-author of the study. "Before this survey, however, there were vast gaps in our knowledge of sharks and rays in this region." The survey was part of a broader project working toward improved management of sharks and rays in Indonesia and Australia, researchers said.

              | If you're looking for some new
diving adventure you may want to visit Dominica's Dive fest which
is scheduled to take place this  year from 6th - 15th July
                hosted by the Dominica
Watersports Association. Its purpose is to educate the
public about scuba diving, which is one of Dominica's main
                tourist attractions.
Dominica's Dive Fest is the longest running Diving Fest
event in the Caribbean. 2007 marks the 14th consecutive Dive
                Fest!
                The DWA
created Dive Fest in order to give local Dominicans a chance to
learn more about scuba diving. Through its Discover Scuba,
Discover Scuba Diving and Discover Snorkelling programs,
children and adults can take the plunge and experience diving
                first hand.
Education about the marine environment has also been an
important part of Dive Fest. In past years, school children have
attended slide shows on marine life and participated in lectures
about marine ecology aboard a dive boat while touring the
                Soufriere Scott's Head Marine Reserve.
Dive Fest provides fun for everyone...Plenty of Scuba Diving!
Free lessons at the beach and discounted rates for making a
real dive. Also on the program are athletic events uch as the Swimming Race, Kayaking Race,
and the famous Carib Canoe Race. Party goers will enjoy the Beach Bar-B-Q and the "Jing
Ping Ting" - an evening of good food, good fun, and
dancing to traditional Jing Ping Music.

                Recall: Oceanic Atom 2.0
Oceanic Worldwide of San Leandro, Calif., is voluntarily recalling Oceanic ATOM 2.0
Wrist Watch Dive Computers. Oceanic has been notified by its supplier (Pelagic Pressure
Systems) that they received isolated reports that two ATOM 2.0 Dive Computers locked
into the Gas Switch-to screen and did not return to the Main Dive screen when the divers
switched the units from Gas 1 to Gas d2 during dives when they were only using one
Transmitter, and Pressure associated with Gas 2 was being provided by an Analog Gauge.

Affected are Oceanic ATOM 2.0 Wrist Watch Dive Computers having serial
numbers 1 through 2079 that were sold between August 2006 and February 2007, and are being used for diving
activities that include use of multiple gas mixes not associated with multiple
                transmitters.
Testing and evaluation has shown that this can occur if the control button used to
switch Gases during a dive is depressed too long (4 seconds instead of the 2 seconds
required to perform the operation) or it is pressed multiple times for 2 seconds when a
Gas Switch operation is performed when there are multiple Gases (FO2 mixes) but not
multiple Transmitters. Engineering programmers have modified the software of the ATOM
2.0 to prevent the Switch-to screen from locking on the display.
Oceanic asks that all owners of affected Oceanic ATOM 2.0 Wrist Watch Dive Computers
return them to the Authorized Oceanic Dealer from which they were purchased for a
                software upgrade at no charge.
If you have one of these, take it to an authorized dealer for a free software upgrade.

Sanctuary, the Maui Ocean Center, Maui Reef Fund, Maui Community College Marine Option

improving and updating current ocean knowledge. In addition, this certification will
help participants meet the requirements for volunteer positions with the Sanctuary’s
Naturalist Corps Program and other island wide volunteer programs where volunteers
assist certified professional guides and owners.

Our eating habits greatly influence the health of our Earth. People are eating more
seafood than ever, and the ocean and its fish are being pushed to the limit. According
to the United Nations, approximately two-thirds of ocean species are over fished, and
many types of ocean fish farming are highly damaging to coastal environments. The
situation is so serious that a study in the journal Science recently projected that
				–
without a change in course – the populations of all wild fish species currently caught
will collapse before the year 2050.
We can all help solve this problem by being "ocean friendly" when we choose our seafood.
If we choose species that are abundant and fished or farmed with minimal harm to the
surrounding environment, we can eat well and do good aet the same time!
Remember that Each small step you take does help the ocean, and each person you inspire
to action magnifies your positive impact!

Did you know that different orca species and pods speak different dialects, yet they can
be taught to talk in a different dialect?
Orca Free is a website we found very interesting as it carries a lot of information
about who they are, how they live, the dangers they face and what we can do to help.
Orcas are the most widely distributed animal on the earth (apart from man) and are found
in every ocean in the world. Whales have existed a thousand times longer than humans,
although we both evolved from the same terrestrial ancestor. In fact, orcas still retain
the remnants of hand, arm, and leg bones in their bodies.
