Breaking news
Research carried out by the U.N. says, Oceans failing the acid test.
The chemistry of the world's oceans is changing at a rate not seen for 65 million years, with far-reaching implications for marine biodiversity and food security, according to a new United Nations study released Thursday.

"Environmental Consequences of Ocean Acidification," published by the U.N. Environmental Program (UNEP)," warns that some sea organisms including coral and shellfish will find it increasingly difficult to survive, as acidification shrinks the minerals needed to form their skeletons.

Lead author of the report Carol Turley, from the UK's Plymouth Marine Laboratory said in a statement: "We are seeing an overall negative impact from ocean acidification directly on organisms and on some key ecosystems that help provide food for billions. We need to start thinking about the risk to food security."

Tropical reefs provide shelter and food for around a quarter of all known marine fish species, according to the U.N. report, while over one billion people rely on fish as a key source of protein.

Increasing acidification is likely to affect the growth and structural integrity of coral reef, the study says, and coupled with ocean warming could limit the habitats of crabs, mussels and other shellfish with knock-on effects up and down the food chain.

Education news
Divers Alert Network® has encouraged young minds interested in the science of diving through the DAN® Research Internship Program since 1999. DAN research internships have opened professional doors and career opportunities for the extraordinary young men and women who complete the program each year.

DAN is now accepting applications for the 2011 program. The minimum commitment is for three months. Following an initial week of training at DAN headquarters, research interns are placed with host facilities, including DAN, where they will participate in projects matched to their interests and ability. The range may include field, laboratory and/or epidemiological studies. Most research interns work closely with mentor experts to maximize their learning opportunities.

Academic credit may be available for students registered in educational programs while completing the research internship.

Strong candidates for this competitive program will have excellent communication and organizational skills, meaningful personal accomplishments, an established commitment to diving and goals that would benefit from participation in the program. Candidates must be 20 years of age (by June 1, 2011) with an educational track in a science field preferred.

Marine Conservation
Act for the angelfish by devoting your New Year's resolution to our ocean. Congratulate yourself for the changes — big and small — you've made this year to conserve our ocean's health and the global community of people and species that depend on it. As you think ahead to the New Year, consider making a resolution to start composting, take public transit, or go vegetarian for one day a week. Many personal goals will benefit you and our ocean!

Turn the tide for turtles by considering a gift that doesn't come in a box. A gift doesn't have to have a big ecological footprint to have a big impact on someone you care about. Whoever you're thinking of this holiday season, the gift of your time or expertise is a generous and much-appreciated alternative to plastic wrap and tape. Or think about how long your gift will last — your aim should be something durable and long-lasting, whether it's to keep in the heart or hold in your hands.

Make a whale of an effort by hosting a green party. Many people are busy buying gifts and planning trips this time of year when letting loose and spending time with friends and family allows us to reconnect and rejuvenate. Consider hosting a green party at your home, replete with evergreen scraps from local Christmas tree sales locations for decoration and locally grown or made food on the menu. Think about what the holidays mean to you — and don't pass up the special opportunity to enjoy the company of friends and family with a clear conscience!
